Synopsis – What to Expect from “Bessie”
Bessie is a 2015 HBO biopic about the life and career of legendary blues singer Bessie Smith. The film stars Queen Latifah as Bessie, along with Michael Kenneth Williams, Khandi Alexander, Mike Epps, Tika Sumpter, and Oliver Platt.
The film follows Bessie’s rise from humble beginnings in Chattanooga, Tennessee to becoming the “Empress of the Blues” in the 1920s and 1930s. As a young woman, Bessie struggles to make ends meet and to break into the male-dominated music industry. She meets Jack Gee (Williams), a man she eventually marries and with whom she has a tumultuous relationship.
Bessie eventually finds success as a singer, but her fame and fortune come at a price. She struggles with alcohol and drug addiction, and her relationships with men are often tumultuous. She is also faced with racism and sexism in the music industry, and her career is threatened by the changing musical tastes of the time.
Through it all, Bessie remains a strong and determined woman who refuses to be held down by the limitations placed on her by society. Despite her struggles, she perseveres and eventually finds her place in the music industry.
