Synopsis – What to Expect from “Bernie”
Bernie is a dark comedy-drama based on a true story. It stars Jack Black as Bernie Tiede, a beloved mortician in the small town of Carthage, Texas.
The film begins with Bernie’s arrival to Carthage, where he quickly becomes a beloved member of the community. He is known for his generous nature and kind heart, and is beloved by all.
Bernie befriends Marjorie Nugent, a wealthy widow who is disliked by many in the town. Marjorie is demanding and often takes advantage of Bernie’s good nature. Bernie begins to spend more and more time with Marjorie, eventually becoming her companion and confidante.
However, Bernie’s relationship with Marjorie soon takes a darker turn. Marjorie begins to take advantage of Bernie, pushing him to his limits. Bernie eventually snaps and kills Marjorie in a fit of rage.
Bernie then goes to great lengths to cover up his crime, going so far as to keep Marjorie’s body in her freezer for nine months. Eventually, Bernie’s crime is discovered and he is arrested and charged with murder.
At his trial, Bernie’s lawyers argue that he was driven to kill Marjorie due to her abusive and manipulative behavior. The jury finds Bernie guilty, but decides to sentence him to life in prison instead of the death penalty.
