Synopsis – What to Expect from “Benny & Joon”
Benny & Joon is a 1993 romantic comedy-drama directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik. The film stars Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson as two eccentric individuals who are brought together by fate.
Benny (Aidan Quinn) is a lonely mechanic who is struggling to take care of his mentally ill sister Joon (Masterson). Joon has a strong attachment to her imaginary friend, Sam (Depp), and Benny is worried about her mental state. In an effort to help Joon, Benny takes her to a psychiatrist, Dr. Gomez (Oliver Platt), who prescribes her medication.
At the same time, Benny meets a woman named Ruthie (Julianne Moore) and they begin a relationship. However, Benny is still concerned about Joon and decides to take her to a carnival. During their visit, Joon meets Sam, who is actually a professional clown.
Sam and Joon quickly become friends and he moves in with Benny and Joon. Sam helps Benny with his car repair business and encourages Joon to pursue her creative passions. As their friendship grows, Benny and Sam begin to develop feelings for each other, but Benny is hesitant to act on them due to his responsibilities to Joon.
