Synopsis – What to Expect from “Belle”
Belle is a 2013 British period drama film directed by Amma Asante. The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tom Wilkinson, Miranda Richardson, Penelope Wilton, Sam Reid, Matthew Goode, Emily Watson, and Sarah Gadon.
The film is set in 1769, and follows the story of a mixed-race young woman named Belle (Mbatha-Raw). Born the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral, Belle is raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Wilkinson) and his wife (Wilton). Belle is a beautiful young woman who is determined to take control of her own destiny.
Belle is deeply affected by the injustices of the world around her, particularly the slave trade, and she is determined to make a difference. She is befriended by the idealistic young vicar’s daughter Elizabeth (Gadon) and her cousin Oliver (Reid), who share her views on the unfairness of the slave trade.
Belle’s life is further complicated by the arrival of a suitor, the wealthy and ambitious James Ashford (Goode). Belle finds herself torn between her growing feelings for James, and her desire to pursue a more meaningful life.
Belle’s story is ultimately one of courage and determination. Despite the obstacles she faces, she is determined to make a difference and to create a better world for herself and those around her.
