Synopsis – What to Expect from “Being There”
Being There is a 1979 American comedy-drama film directed by Hal Ashby. The film stars Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, Melvyn Douglas, Jack Warden, Richard A. Dysart, and Richard Basehart.

Chance is taken in by a wealthy businessman and his wife, who mistake him for a wise and powerful figure. Chance’s simple-mindedness and innocence are mistaken for profundity, and he quickly rises to the top of the political and business world.
Chance’s newfound celebrity status brings him into contact with the President of the United States, who seeks his advice on matters of world affairs. Chance’s simple-mindedness and naivety, however, lead to a series of misunderstandings that ultimately result in a major scandal.
In the end, Chance is able to use his newfound celebrity status to help the President reconcile with his estranged daughter. Chance’s simple-mindedness and innocence prove to be a great asset, as he is able to bring people together and help them find understanding and common ground.
Being There is a comedic and insightful look at the power of innocence and the nature of celebrity. It
