Synopsis – What to Expect from “Being Flynn”
Being Flynn is a 2012 American drama film directed by Paul Weitz and starring Robert De Niro, Julianne Moore, and Paul Dano. It is based on the memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City by Nick Flynn.
The film follows Nick Flynn (Dano), a young man struggling to make his way in New York City. He works at a homeless shelter and is struggling to write a book. His life is further complicated when his estranged father Jonathan (De Niro) shows up at the shelter and Nick is forced to confront the demons of his past.
The film chronicles the relationship between father and son as they both try to come to terms with their respective lives. Nick is forced to confront the fact that his father is an alcoholic and that he may have been the cause of his mother’s death. Jonathan is trying to make amends with his son, but his alcoholism and mental illness make it difficult.
The film follows Nick and Jonathan as they both try to find a way to move forward with their lives. Nick begins to write his book and Jonathan searches for a job. Eventually Jonathan finds a job at a bookstore and the two begin to form a relationship.
At the same time, Nick is struggling to come to terms with his own mental health issues. He is haunted by the memories of his mother and his father’s alcoholism. He also begins to realize that he is gay and must come to terms with his identity.
