Synopsis – What to Expect from “Behind the Candelabra”
Behind the Candelabra is a 2013 HBO biographical drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh. It tells the story of the life of musician and entertainer Liberace and his tumultuous five-year relationship with Scott Thorson.
The film begins with Scott Thorson (Matt Damon), a young animal trainer, meeting famous entertainer Liberace (Michael Douglas). Liberace, who is older than Scott, is instantly smitten with him and invites him to his home. Scott is dazzled by Liberace’s lavish lifestyle and agrees to become his companion.
The two men quickly become lovers and Liberace lavishes Scott with attention and gifts. Liberace introduces Scott to his show business friends and takes him on tour with him. However, Liberace is a deeply closeted homosexual and his relationship with Scott soon becomes strained by his fear of being exposed.
Despite this, the two remain together for five years, until Liberace’s increasing demands and possessiveness drive Scott away. Liberace’s health also begins to decline, and Scott learns that Liberace is dying of AIDS.
In the end, Scott is left to cope with the loss of his lover and the realization that his life with Liberace was a lie. He must now move on with his life and find his own identity.
