Synopsis – What to Expect from “Becket”
Becket is a 1964 historical drama film directed by Peter Glenville, based on the play by Jean Anouilh. The film stars Richard Burton as Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and Peter O’Toole as King Henry II of England.
The film begins with the coronation of Henry II as King of England. Henry is a strong-willed, ambitious ruler who is determined to bring England under his control. He appoints his friend Thomas Becket as Lord Chancellor of England, believing that Becket’s loyalty will ensure his success.
Becket, however, is a man of strong faith and conscience. He soon begins to oppose Henry’s policies, particularly those that go against the teachings of the church. This leads to a bitter feud between the two men, with Becket eventually being banished from the court.
Becket’s exile leads him to a monastery in France, where he finds solace and strength. He eventually returns to England and is appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, a position he holds with great dignity and courage. Despite Henry’s attempts to control him, Becket continues to stand up for his beliefs and the teachings of the church.
The tension between Henry and Becket reaches a boiling point when Henry orders the assassination of Becket. In the end, Henry is forced to confront his own guilt and accept the consequences of his actions. The film ends with a powerful scene in which Henry kneels before the tomb of
