Synopsis/Plot
Battle of the Sexes is a 2017 biographical sports comedy-drama film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The film stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell as the main characters and is based on the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.
The film follows the story of Billie Jean King, a professional tennis player, who was the world’s number one female player in the early 1970s. King is invited to a challenge match against former men’s champion Bobby Riggs, a 55-year-old hustler. King accepts the challenge, believing it to be a great opportunity to promote women’s tennis and to prove that women can be just as competitive as men.
The film follows the buildup to the match and the match itself, as well as King’s personal struggles as she deals with her husband’s infidelity and her own sexuality. The film also examines the sexism in the tennis world, as King fights for equal pay for women in the sport.
