Synopsis/Plot
Barry Lyndon is a 1975 period drama film directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on the 1844 novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray. The film follows the exploits of an Irish rogue, Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal), as he attempts to make his way up in 18th century British society.
The film begins in Ireland, where Barry is a member of a small gang of highwaymen, robbing travelers for their money. After a failed robbery attempt, Barry is sentenced to join the British Army, but deserts and joins a regiment of Prussian soldiers instead. He soon proves himself to be a brave and capable soldier, and is promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
Barry’s luck takes a turn for the better when he meets the beautiful Lady Lyndon (Marisa Berenson) and her husband, the wealthy Sir Charles Lyndon (Leonard Rossiter). After Sir Charles dies, Barry quickly marries Lady Lyndon and sets out to make his fortune. He takes part in a number of duels, and eventually rises to the rank of a baron.
