Synopsis/Plot
Barfly is a 1987 American romantic black comedy film directed by Barbet Schroeder and starring Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway. The film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Charles Bukowski.
The film follows Henry ‘Hank’ Chinaski, a hard-drinking, hard-living writer who spends most of his days drinking in dive bars. Hank meets Wanda Wilcox, a fellow alcoholic and barfly, and the two quickly become friends. Despite their mutual attraction, Hank and Wanda’s relationship is tumultuous, and their drinking often leads to violent outbursts.
Hank’s drinking and writing eventually lead him to the brink of self-destruction. Even with his friend Eddie’s help, Hank is unable to pull himself out of his downward spiral. Eventually, Hank meets a woman who helps him to find the courage to confront his demons and start a new life.
Barfly is a gritty, realistic look at the life of an alcoholic and the struggles they face. It is a powerful and moving film that shows the power of love and friendship, as well as the strength of the human spirit.
