The film follows Will Burton, a socially awkward high school student who is a fan of classic rock music. His mother, Karen, has just moved the family to a new town, and Will finds it difficult to fit in. He meets Charlotte, an attractive girl who is also a fan of classic rock. Charlotte encourages Will to join her school’s “Bandslam” competition, an annual battle of the bands. Will forms a band with Charlotte’s help and recruits several other talented musicians.
The band begins to practice and prepare for the competition, while Will also starts to develop feelings for Charlotte. Meanwhile, Will’s former best friend and rival, Ben, is also competing in the competition with his own band. As the competition draws near, Will and Ben’s rivalry intensifies, and the two must battle it out on stage.
