Synopsis – What to Expect from “Ball of Fire”
Ball of Fire is a classic screwball comedy released in 1941 starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. The film follows the story of Professor Bertram Potts, an elderly, pedantic professor of linguistics who is writing an encyclopedia with the help of seven other professors. The group is tasked with writing a definition of modern slang, but are unable to find a suitable source.
Meanwhile, nightclub singer and dancer Sugarpuss O’Shea is on the run from the police after her mobster boyfriend is arrested. She takes refuge with the professors, posing as their new housekeeper and teaching them the latest slang. As Sugarpuss and the professors get to know each other better, a romance begins to blossom between Sugarpuss and Professor Potts.
The mobsters, however, soon catch up with Sugarpuss and demand that she return to them. She refuses, and the mobsters threaten to kill the professors if they don’t give her up. The professors come up with a plan to rescue Sugarpuss and outwit the mobsters. In the end, Sugarpuss is saved, the mobsters are arrested, and the professors are able to finish their encyclopedia with the help of Sugarpuss’ slang. Professor Potts and Sugarpuss also find love, and the film ends with a happy ending.
