Synopsis/Plot
Bad Words is a 2013 American dark comedy film directed by Jason Bateman and written by Andrew Dodge. The film stars Bateman as Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the rules of The Golden Quill national spelling bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Along the way, he forms an unlikely alliance with a friendly competitor, a young Indian-American boy named Chaitanya Chopra (Rohan Chand).
The movie follows Guy as he wreaks havoc on the spelling bee and attempts to win the competition. He is aided by a reporter, Jenny Widgeon (Kathryn Hahn), who is determined to uncover his mysterious past. As Guy and Chaitanya become friends, Guy begins to open up and reveal his troubled childhood and the reason why he is so determined to win the competition.
The movie is filled with dark humor, and its themes of friendship and redemption make it an enjoyable watch. Guy’s character is flawed and complex, and his journey is both humorous and touching. The movie also offers a commentary on the spelling bee competition, and how it can be used to bring out the best and worst in people.
