Synopsis – What to Expect from “AWOL”

AWOL is a 2017 romantic drama film directed by Deb Shoval and starring Lola Kirke, Breeda Wool, and Dale Soules. The film follows Joey (Kirke), a young woman from a small town in Pennsylvania who is trying to find her place in the world.

Joey is a working-class, 20-something woman living in a small town in Pennsylvania. She works at a local diner and is struggling to make ends meet. She dreams of a better life, but feels trapped by the expectations of her family and small-town life.

One day, Joey meets Rayna (Wool), an Army recruiter, who encourages Joey to enlist in the Army. Joey is intrigued and finds herself drawn to Rayna, who is also a lesbian. Joey decides to take a chance and enlist.

Joey undergoes training, and soon discovers a newfound sense of purpose and belonging. She excels in her training and is soon promoted to the rank of Corporal. Meanwhile, she and Rayna become close and eventually fall in love.

But Joey’s newfound freedom and happiness is threatened when she is deployed to Afghanistan. While overseas, Joey struggles to cope with the harsh realities of war and the danger she faces every day. She also finds herself torn between her duty to her country and her love for Rayna.
