Synopsis – What to Expect from “Avanti!”
Avanti! is a 1972 American romantic comedy film directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills.
The film follows the story of Wendell Armbruster Jr. (Lemmon), a successful American businessman who travels to Italy to retrieve the body of his father, who died in a car accident. He meets the beautiful daughter of the man his father was with in the accident, and the two develop a strong bond.
When Wendell arrives in Italy, he is met with hostility from the locals, who blame his father for the accident. He soon learns that his father was having an affair with the daughter of the man who died in the accident, and that the two were planning to elope. Despite the scandal, Wendell and the woman, Pamela Piggott (Mills), form an unlikely bond.
Wendell and Pamela eventually find themselves falling in love, but their relationship is threatened by the disapproval of the locals, as well as Wendell’s own sense of responsibility and duty to his family. With the help of some of the locals, Wendell and Pamela must overcome the obstacles in their path and find a way to be together.
The film features a number of comedic moments, as well as some poignant reflections on love and loyalty. It is a heart-warming story of two people who find each other in the unlikeliest of places.
