Synopsis – What to Expect from “Arsenic and Old Lace”
Arsenic and Old Lace is a black comedy film released in 1944. It is based on the play of the same name by Joseph Kesselring.
The film follows Mortimer Brewster, a young drama critic who is engaged to marry Elaine Harper. Mortimer is horrified to discover that his two aunts, Abby and Martha, have been poisoning lonely old men with arsenic-laced elderberry wine.
When Mortimer finds out, he decides to keep his aunts’ secret and find a way to protect them from the law. He enlists the help of his brother, Teddy, who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt and has been digging a Panama Canal in the basement of the Brewster family home.
Mortimer must also deal with his other brother, Jonathan, who is a homicidal maniac. Jonathan has been hiding out in the family home and is determined to kill Mortimer.
Meanwhile, Mortimer’s fiancée, Elaine, is determined to find out why Mortimer is so distant and discovers the truth about his aunts. Mortimer must find a way to protect his aunts and stop Jonathan before it is too late.
The film follows Mortimer’s attempts to protect his aunts, stop Jonathan, and keep his relationship with Elaine intact. In the end, Mortimer must decide between doing what is right and doing what is necessary to protect his family.
