Synopsis/Plot
Apollo 11 is a 2019 American documentary film directed by Todd Douglas Miller. The film chronicles the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, the first spaceflight from which humans, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, landed on the Moon. The film is composed entirely of archival footage, including 70 mm film previously unreleased to the public.
The film begins with a brief overview of the Apollo 11 mission, including the launch of the Saturn V rocket on July 16, 1969, and the launch of the three-man crew. It then follows the mission in real time, from the launch to the splashdown of the Command Module in the Pacific Ocean several days later. The film highlights the mission’s many milestones, including Armstrong and Aldrin’s historic first steps on the Moon and Armstrong’s famous words, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”
The film also captures the mission’s many challenges, from a malfunctioning computer to a fuel shortage that forced Armstrong and Aldrin to manually pilot the Lunar Module back to the Command Module. In addition, the film includes interviews with some of the mission’s key personnel, including former NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and former NASA Flight Director
