Synopsis – What to Expect from “Another Year”
Another Year is a 2010 British comedy-drama film written and directed by Mike Leigh. The film follows the lives of Tom and Gerri, a happily married couple in their sixties, and their relationships with family and friends over the course of four seasons.
The film begins with a look at Tom and Gerri’s lives, happily married for many years with a successful garden center business. They are surrounded by a close circle of friends and family, including Mary, a lonely single woman in her forties.
The film follows the four seasons, starting with spring. Tom and Gerri enjoy the company of their friends and family, as well as their own company. Mary, however, becomes increasingly dependent on their friendship and begins to act out in a desperate attempt to gain their attention.
As summer approaches, Tom and Gerri take a holiday abroad and Mary is left behind. On their return, they discover that Mary has become increasingly unstable, and her behaviour becomes more and more erratic.
As autumn approaches, Mary’s mental health continues to decline, and she begins to make desperate attempts to win Tom and Gerri’s affection. Tom and Gerri do their best to help Mary, but they are struggling to cope with her behaviour.
Finally, as winter arrives, Mary’s mental health deteriorates further, and her increasingly desperate attempts to gain Tom and Gerri’s affection become more and more extreme. The film ends with Tom and Gerri’s
