The movie follows Lynn (Ellen Barkin), a divorced mother of four grown children, as she attempts to make it through her son’s wedding weekend at her estranged family’s estate. As the weekend progresses, Lynn’s past and present collide in a series of emotionally charged events.
The film opens on the day of Elliot’s (Ezra Miller) wedding. Lynn is in the midst of planning the event, with her ex-husband, Paul (Thomas Haden Church), and his new wife, Alice (Demi Moore), in attendance. As the day progresses, Lynn’s children, Ben (Daniel Yelsky), Ellen (Kate Bosworth), Dylan (Ellen Burstyn), and Elliot, begin to arrive. Lynn is anxious to keep things running smoothly, but tensions quickly rise as old family issues resurface.
As the weekend progresses, Lynn finds herself struggling to keep the peace between her children, her ex-husband, and Alice. The tension is further heightened when Lynn’s mother, Lois (George Kennedy), arrives. Lois has never approved of Lynn’s choices and is determined to make her presence felt.
