Synopsis/Plot
Animal Kingdom is a 2010 Australian crime drama film written and directed by David Michôd. It tells the story of seventeen-year-old Joshua “J” Cody, who moves in with his extended family of criminals after the death of his mother. The family is headed by matriarch Janine “Smurf” Cody, and consists of her three sons, Pope, Craig, and Darren; and her grandchildren, J, Nicky, and Baby.
The film follows J as he is drawn into the criminal activities of his extended family. He quickly learns that his family’s criminal activities are far more dangerous than he ever imagined. As J struggles to make sense of his new life, he finds himself in a web of violence, drugs, and crime.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver, James Frecheville, Sullivan Stapleton, and Luke Ford. The film was critically acclaimed, with particular praise for Weaver’s performance. It was nominated for six AACTA Awards, winning five, including Best Film and Best Direction for Michôd.
