Synopsis – What to Expect from “Angela’s Ashes”
Angela’s Ashes is a 1999 drama film directed by Alan Parker and based on the memoir of the same name by Frank McCourt. The film follows the life of young Frank McCourt and his family as they struggle to survive in poverty in Limerick, Ireland.
The film begins with young Frank (played by Ciaran Owens) and his family living in a slum in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Malachy (played by Robert Carlyle), is an alcoholic who is unable to keep a job and the family is forced to move back to Ireland. Upon their arrival in Limerick, the family is met with a cold welcome from the locals and the poverty they face is overwhelming.
Frank’s mother, Angela (played by Emily Watson), does her best to care for her children and keep the family afloat. Despite her efforts, the family continues to struggle and Frank must resort to stealing food and money to help his family survive.
Frank’s father’s alcoholism continues to worsen and his mother is forced to send him to a Catholic school run by nuns. Despite his difficult circumstances, Frank excels in school and finds solace in his studies. He also finds solace in his love of reading and writing, which helps him to cope with his struggles.
As the years pass, Frank’s father’s alcoholism gets worse and eventually leads to his death. Frank’s mother is left to care for the family on her own and must make difficult decisions
