Synopsis/Plot
An Education is a 2009 British coming-of-age drama film directed by Lone Scherfig and written by Nick Hornby, based on the memoir of the same name by British journalist Lynn Barber. The film stars Carey Mulligan as Jenny, a bright schoolgirl, and Peter Sarsgaard as David, the charming, much older man who seduces her.
The story follows Jenny, a 16-year-old schoolgirl in 1960s suburban London, who is on the cusp of adulthood. She is a bright student, with dreams of attending Oxford University, but her parents are more concerned with her finding a suitable husband. When she meets David, a charming older man, she is quickly swept up in his exciting world of jazz clubs, dinner parties, and foreign travel.
At first, Jenny is dazzled by the attention and sophistication of David and his friends, and she soon finds herself in a relationship with him. However, as she grows more involved in his world, she begins to realize the dangers of his lifestyle. With the help of her parents and teachers, she is able to break away from David and reclaim her own life.
