Synopsis – What to Expect from “An American in Paris”
An American in Paris is a 1951 American musical romantic comedy-drama film inspired by the 1928 orchestral composition An American in Paris by George Gershwin.
The film follows the story of Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly), an American ex-GI who has stayed in Paris after the war. He is a struggling artist and dreams of achieving success in the world of art. He meets a beautiful French girl, Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron), and falls in love with her, but she is already engaged to a wealthy and influential Frenchman.
Jerry’s life is further complicated when he meets an American heiress, Milo Roberts (Nina Foch), who is also interested in him. While Jerry is torn between the two women, he is also struggling to make a living as an artist.
When Jerry’s friend, Adam (Oscar Levant), invites him to perform in an avant-garde ballet, Jerry takes the opportunity and finds himself dancing with Lise. The two eventually fall in love, but Lise’s fiancé is still a barrier to their happiness.
The film culminates in a spectacular ballet performance, where Jerry and Lise finally express their love for each other. The film ends with Jerry and Lise dancing together in the streets of Paris, surrounded by the beauty of the city.
