Synopsis/Plot
American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally is a 2020 drama film directed by Mark Steven Johnson. The film follows the true story of Mildred Gillars (Mélanie Laurent), a German-American radio propagandist who was tried for treason against the United States after World War II.
In the 1940s, Mildred Gillars was a popular radio personality in Berlin, known as “Axis Sally.” She was recruited by the Nazis to broadcast English-language propaganda to Allied troops. While her broadcasts were intended to weaken morale, she also used the opportunity to express her own pro-Nazi views.
After the war, Gillars was arrested in Germany and extradited to the United States to stand trial for treason. Her trial, which lasted several months, was a sensation in the media. Gillars was represented by a young lawyer, James Laughlin (Al Pacino), who argued that she was a victim of Nazi coercion. Despite his efforts, Gillars was convicted and sentenced to 10-30 years in prison.
