American Pop is an animated musical drama film released in 1981. It follows the history of four generations of a Russian Jewish family of musicians whose careers parallel the history of American popular music.
The movie begins in the late 19th century, when the family patriarch, Zalmie, escapes from Russia to America. He brings with him his musical talents and dreams of making it big in America. He quickly finds success and starts a family band, which performs at various venues in the United States.
The story then moves to the early 20th century, when Zalmie’s son, Benny, takes over the family business. He introduces jazz and swing music to the family band, and they become a popular act.
The story then moves to the 1940s, when Benny’s son, Tony, takes over the family business. He introduces rock ‘n’ roll music to the band, and they become even more popular.
The movie then moves to the 1970s, when Tony’s son, Louie, takes over the family business. He introduces disco music to the band, and they become even more popular.
The movie ends with Louie’s son, Alex, taking over the family business. He brings a new sound to the band, and they become even more popular.
