Synopsis/Plot
American Graffiti is a 1973 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed and co-written by George Lucas. Set in Modesto, California, in 1962, the film is a study of the cruising and rock and roll cultures popular among the post-World War II baby boomer youths. The film is told in a series of vignettes, telling the story of a group of teenagers and their adventures over the course of a single night.
The film follows four main characters: Curt Henderson (Richard Dreyfuss), Steve Bolander (Ron Howard), John Milner (Paul Le Mat), and Terry “The Toad” Fields (Charles Martin Smith). Curt is about to leave for college and is struggling to find his place in the world. Steve is the popular guy who is torn between staying in Modesto and pursuing a career in drag racing. John is the tough guy whose main passion is hot rods. Terry is the nerdy kid who is trying to fit in with the other guys.
