Synopsis/Plot
American Beauty is a 1999 American drama film written by Alan Ball and directed by Sam Mendes. The film stars Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Mena Suvari, Wes Bentley, and Chris Cooper. The film follows Lester Burnham, a middle-aged magazine executive who is in the midst of a midlife crisis. He quits his job, begins to re-examine his life, and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
The film opens with Lester’s narration, where he states that he will be dead in a year and that he is beginning to look back on his life with a newfound appreciation. The film then cuts to him at his job, where he is unfulfilled and unappreciated. He is married to Carolyn, a real estate agent who is obsessed with her work and constantly puts Lester down. He has a teenage daughter, Jane, who is trying to find her own identity and is dating a troubled young man, Ricky.
At home, Lester begins to rebel against his mundane existence, smoking marijuana, working out, and taking a job at a fast food restaurant. At the same time, he begins to develop a crush on Jane
