Synopsis – What to Expect from “Amazing Grace”
Amazing Grace is a 2006 British-American biographical drama film directed by Michael Apted. It is based on the life of British politician William Wilberforce, who was instrumental in the passing of the 1807 Slave Trade Act, which abolished the slave trade in the British Empire.
The movie begins with Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) as a young man, enjoying a life of privilege and wealth. He is a Member of Parliament, but his focus is on his social life and having a good time. However, he is soon confronted by a friend, William Pitt (Benedict Cumberbatch), who implores him to use his influence to do something meaningful.
Wilberforce is soon moved by the plight of the African slaves and decides to take action. He joins forces with a group of like-minded individuals, including Thomas Clarkson (Rufus Sewell) and John Newton (Albert Finney), to fight for the abolition of the slave trade.
Wilberforce faces immense opposition from the powerful slave trade lobby and from within his own party. He is ridiculed and threatened, but he perseveres and works tirelessly to build a coalition of support for the abolition of the slave trade.
The movie follows Wilberforce’s struggles and triumphs as he attempts to pass the Slave Trade Act. Along the way, he faces numerous obstacles and is forced to make difficult decisions. In the end, he succeeds in his mission
