Synopsis – What to Expect from “All the Way”
All the Way is a 2016 drama film directed by Jay Roach and written by Robert Schenkkan, based on his play of the same name. The film stars Bryan Cranston as Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States, and chronicles his efforts to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The film opens in November 1963, shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in as the 36th President of the United States and is immediately faced with the daunting task of trying to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Johnson, a master politician, works with both sides of the aisle to get the bill passed, but faces strong opposition from many members of Congress, including Senator Richard Russell (Frank Langella).
Meanwhile, Johnson also has to contend with the growing civil rights movement, led by Martin Luther King Jr. (Anthony Mackie). King is determined to see the bill passed, but Johnson is wary of the movement and its potential to cause public unrest.
Johnson and King eventually come to an agreement, and the bill is passed in July of 1964. However, Johnson’s victory is short-lived as he soon faces a tough re-election campaign against Senator Barry Goldwater (Bradley Whitford).
The film follows Johnson as he navigates the political landscape of the 1960s, all while trying to maintain his integrity and legacy. In the end, Johnson succeeds in
