Synopsis – What to Expect from “All or Nothing”
All or Nothing is a British drama film released in 2002, written and directed by Mike Leigh. It follows the lives of an ordinary working-class family living in the London Borough of Southwark.
The film centers around the lives of Penny (Lesley Manville) and her partner, Phil (Timothy Spall). They live in a small, cramped flat with their two children, Rachel (Alison Garland) and Rory (James Corden). Penny works as a cashier in a local supermarket while Phil is unemployed and spends most of his time drinking at the local pub.
The family struggles to make ends meet and Penny is constantly worrying about money. She is also dealing with her mother’s (Ruth Sheen) failing health and trying to keep her children in line.
As the story progresses, the family’s financial situation worsens and they are forced to make difficult decisions. Penny and Phil decide to take out a loan to cover their debts but this only adds to their problems. Phil’s drinking and gambling also cause tension in the family and it begins to take a toll on their relationship.
Meanwhile, Rachel and Rory are dealing with their own issues. Rachel is struggling to come to terms with her sexuality and Rory is trying to find his place in the world.
The family eventually reaches a breaking point and they are forced to confront their problems and decide whether they will stay together or go their separate ways.
