Synopsis/Plot
All About Eve is a 1950 American drama film written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and produced by Darryl F. Zanuck. It stars Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, and Thelma Ritter. The film is based on the 1946 short story “The Wisdom of Eve” by Mary Orr.
The film follows Margo Channing (Bette Davis), a veteran Broadway star who takes a young and ambitious fan named Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) under her wing. Eve quickly becomes Margo’s assistant and confidante, but as Eve’s admiration for Margo grows, her own ambitions take shape and she begins to scheme and manipulate those around her to get what she wants.
The film is a biting satire of the theatre world and its inhabitants, and examines themes of ambition, jealousy, and manipulation. It was a critical and commercial success, and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time.
