Synopsis/Plot
Akeelah and the Bee is a 2006 American drama film written and directed by Doug Atchison. It tells the story of Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer), an 11-year-old girl from South Los Angeles who participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in order to save her struggling school from closure.
Akeelah is an intelligent girl, but she is also a loner and an underachiever. She often skips classes to hang out with her friends and has a difficult relationship with her single mother, Tanya (Angela Bassett). When Akeelah is chosen to represent her school in the spelling bee, she is initially reluctant to participate, but she soon realizes that she has a talent for spelling.
With the help of her teacher, Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), and her mentor, Dr. Joshua Larabee (Curtis Armstrong), Akeelah begins to prepare for the competition. Along the way, she overcomes obstacles such as bullying, self-doubt, and family issues. Despite her struggles, Akeelah is determined to do her best and prove to everyone that she can be a champion.
