Synopsis – What to Expect from “Airport 1975”
Airport 1975 is a 1974 disaster film directed by Jack Smight and starring Charlton Heston, Karen Black, George Kennedy, Gloria Swanson, and Helen Reddy. It is the first in the Airport franchise of disaster films.
The film follows the events of a commercial airliner flight from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles, California. On board the flight are the passengers, crew, and a number of important figures including the President of the United States (Heston).
When the plane takes off, the pilot (Kennedy) suffers a heart attack and passes out, leaving the First Officer (Lloyd Nolan) to take control of the plane. With the plane on autopilot, the passengers and crew are unaware of the situation and continue their journey.
Meanwhile, the First Officer is unable to make contact with any air traffic control and the plane is left to drift off course. As the plane is heading towards the Rocky Mountains, the passengers and crew become aware of the situation and panic starts to set in.
In a desperate attempt to save the plane, the First Officer decides to fly the plane manually, despite the fact that he has no experience in doing so. With the help of the passengers and crew, he is able to successfully navigate the plane away from the mountains and land it safely at an airport.
