Synopsis/Plot
Agora is a 2009 Spanish historical drama film directed by Alejandro Amenábar and written by Amenábar and Mateo Gil. Set in Roman Egypt in the 4th century, the story follows the life of Hypatia, a female mathematician, philosopher, and astronomer who is a prominent figure in the city of Alexandria.
The film opens with a brief overview of the city of Alexandria and its importance to the world. Hypatia is the daughter of Theon, a renowned mathematician and astronomer. Hypatia is a young woman of extraordinary intelligence and beauty, and her father has taught her to think for herself and to challenge the status quo.
The film follows Hypatia as she teaches her students the principles of mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy. Her teachings are met with resistance from the Christian community, who view her as a blasphemer. Hypatia is also faced with the challenge of choosing between her love for two men, the Christian slave Davus and the Roman prefect Orestes.
As religious tensions in the city continue to rise, Hypatia is caught in the middle of a battle between the traditional pagan beliefs and the growing Christian faith. She is determined to defend her beliefs
