Synopsis – What to Expect from “Against the Ropes”
Against the Ropes is a 2004 American sports drama film directed by Charles S. Dutton and starring Meg Ryan and Omar Epps. The film is based on the true story of boxing promoter Jackie Kallen, who was the first female to become a major boxing promoter.
The story follows Kallen, a Detroit native who has been working in the boxing world for years, but has never been able to break through the glass ceiling of the male-dominated sport. She finally gets her chance when she meets Luther Shaw (Epps), a talented but troubled boxer from the wrong side of the tracks. Despite her lack of experience, Kallen takes a chance on Shaw and begins to train him with the help of former boxing champion Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris (Dutton).
As Kallen and Shaw’s relationship deepens, she begins to believe in him and his potential. With her help, Shaw begins to rise through the ranks of the boxing world, eventually earning a shot at the World Middleweight Championship. Along the way, Kallen has to battle the prejudice of the boxing establishment and the temptations of the fame and fortune that come with success.
