Synopsis – What to Expect from “Absence of Malice”
Absence of Malice is a 1981 American drama film directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Paul Newman, Sally Field, and Bob Balaban. The film tells the story of Michael Gallagher (Newman), a Miami liquor store owner who finds himself the target of a malicious news story. When a Miami newspaper reporter (Field) prints a story linking Gallagher to a murder investigation, Gallagher must find a way to clear his name and fight back against the media.
The story begins with an investigation into the murder of a young woman, Teresa Perrone. Gallagher, a friend of Teresa’s family, is suspected of being involved in the murder. The Miami newspaper reporter, Megan Carter, prints a story linking Gallagher to the murder investigation, based on an anonymous tip. Gallagher is stunned and outraged by the story, and he soon finds himself the target of a malicious media campaign.
Gallagher’s lawyer, Elliot Rosen, advises him to cooperate with the investigation and to talk to the reporter. Gallagher reluctantly agrees, and meets with Carter. She tells him that her source for the story was an anonymous tip, and that she believes Gallagher is innocent. Gallagher and Carter develop a tentative relationship, as Gallagher tries to clear his name and Carter tries to get to the truth.
As the investigation continues, Gallagher’s name is cleared and the real killer is found. But Gallagher soon finds out that the anonymous tip was actually planted by the FBI in order to pressure Gallagher into revealing information about his
