Synopsis – What to Expect from “About Schmidt”
About Schmidt is a 2002 American comedy-drama film directed and co-written by Alexander Payne and starring Jack Nicholson. It is a story of a recently retired Omaha, Nebraska actuary, Warren Schmidt (Jack Nicholson), who is coming to terms with his own mortality and the futility of his life.
The film begins with Warren Schmidt on the eve of his retirement party. He is a man who has lived a predictable, uneventful life and is now facing an uncertain future. He has no real purpose, no real direction in life, and no real friends. He is a man who is about to find out that life has a lot more to offer than he ever expected.
The next day, Warren Schmidt begins his retirement by going on a road trip to Denver, Colorado to attend his daughter Jeannie’s (Hope Davis) wedding. Along the way, he befriends an elderly couple, Ray and Roberta (Kathy Bates and Howard Hesseman), who invite him to stay with them in their trailer.
In Denver, Warren Schmidt discovers that his daughter is marrying a man he doesn’t approve of, Randall Hertzel (Dermot Mulroney). He also meets Randall’s parents, who are wealthy and successful. Though he is initially put off by their wealth and success, he eventually comes to accept them.
Meanwhile, Warren Schmidt begins to write letters to a six-year-old Tanzanian boy, Ndugu
