Synopsis – What to Expect from “Abducted in Plain Sight”
Abducted in Plain Sight is a 2018 documentary that tells the story of Jan Broberg, a 12-year-old girl who was abducted twice by her neighbor, Robert Berchtold, in the 1970s. The film follows the Broberg family as they recount their experience with Berchtold, who was a family friend and neighbor.
The film begins with Jan’s parents, Bob and Mary Ann, recounting the events of the first abduction in 1974. Jan and her family had been close friends with Berchtold, who was an older man in his 30s. Berchtold had manipulated Jan’s parents into allowing him to take Jan on a camping trip, which was actually a ploy to kidnap her. Jan was taken to Mexico and held captive for several months before her parents were able to get her back.
The film then moves to the second abduction in 1976. Berchtold had convinced Jan’s parents to let him take her on a second trip, this time to California. While in California, Berchtold attempted to brainwash Jan and convince her to marry him. Eventually, Jan’s parents were able to get her back, but not before Berchtold had sexually abused her.
The film then follows Jan and her family as they recount the aftermath of the abductions and how it affected their lives. Jan’s parents had to face the difficult decision of whether or not to press charges against Berchtold, and they ultimately
