A Woman Under the Influence is a 1974 American drama film written and directed by John Cassavetes. It tells the story of a woman who struggles to keep her sanity in the face of her husband’s emotional detachment and the pressures of her demanding family.
The film stars Gena Rowlands as Mabel Longhetti, a middle-aged housewife whose life is slowly unraveling due to her husband’s emotional detachment and her family’s high expectations. Mabel is a loving mother, but her increasingly erratic behavior and emotional outbursts cause her husband Nick (Peter Falk) to question her mental stability and leave her alone with their three children.
As Mabel’s mental state deteriorates, she is committed to a mental institution by her husband. While there, she undergoes a series of treatments and therapies, and begins to open up about her feelings of loneliness and alienation.
Meanwhile, Nick struggles to cope with Mabel’s absence and the pressures of his own life. He begins to realize that he has been neglecting Mabel and their children, and begins to take steps to repair his relationship with them.
The film culminates in a powerful scene in which Mabel and Nick reunite and embrace in a passionate embrace. In the end, Mabel is released from the hospital and is able to return to her family, stronger and more resilient than before.
