Synopsis – What to Expect from “A United Kingdom”
A United Kingdom is a 2016 biographical romantic drama film directed by Amma Asante and based on the true story of the marriage between Seretse Khama, the King of Bechuanaland (now Botswana), and Ruth Williams, a white British woman.
The film begins in 1947, when Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo) is studying law in London. One night, he meets a young woman named Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) and the two quickly fall in love. Despite the fact that interracial marriage is illegal in South Africa and frowned upon in Britain, the couple decide to get married.
Seretse and Ruth move to Bechuanaland, where Seretse is to be crowned King. They are met with hostility and suspicion from the tribal elders, who believe that Ruth is a spy sent by the British government to undermine their independence. Despite this, the couple remain committed to each other and to the cause of Bechuanaland’s independence.
As the country moves closer to independence, the British government intervenes and pressures Seretse to renounce his claim to the throne in order to maintain the status quo. Seretse refuses, and the British government retaliates by exiling the couple from Bechuanaland.
