Synopsis – What to Expect from “A Simple Wish”
A Simple Wish is a 1997 fantasy-comedy film directed by Michael Ritchie and starring Martin Short, Mara Wilson, and Kathleen Turner. The story follows 8-year-old Anabel (Wilson) who wishes for a fairy godmother to help her make her father’s (Short) dreams come true.
The film begins with Anabel’s father, Murray, a struggling street performer who dreams of becoming a successful stage magician. Murray is discouraged by his lack of success and is unable to provide his daughter with the things she desires. Anabel, fed up with her father’s failures, makes a wish for a fairy godmother to help make her father’s dreams come true.
The wish is granted, but not in the way Anabel expected. Instead of a fairy godmother, Anabel gets a clumsy and bumbling male fairy godfather, Murray (also played by Short). Murray is an inept fairy godfather who is more concerned with getting his own dreams fulfilled than helping Anabel. He attempts to grant her wish, but instead of making her father’s dreams come true, he grants her wish in a way that puts her in danger.
Anabel is kidnapped by the evil fairy queen, Clorinda (Turner), who wants to use Anabel’s wish to take over the world. Murray and Anabel must team up and use their wits to defeat Clorinda and her evil minions. Along the way, they learn important lessons
