Synopsis/Plot
A Room with a View is a 1985 British romantic comedy-drama film directed by James Ivory and produced by Ismail Merchant, of E. M. Forster’s 1908 novel of the same name. Set in Edwardian England, the film tells the story of Lucy Honeychurch, a young woman from an upper-middle-class family who is trying to find her place in the world.
The story begins with Lucy and her older cousin Charlotte on a holiday in Italy. While there, Lucy meets George Emerson, a young man who challenges her beliefs about the proper behavior of a young woman in her social class. After returning home to England, Lucy is faced with a choice between her old-fashioned values and the new, more liberated life that George offers her.
The film follows Lucy as she navigates her feelings for George, her family’s expectations, and the social conventions of the time. Along the way, she discovers her own strength and learns to make her own decisions.
