Synopsis – What to Expect from “A Passage to India”
A Passage to India is a 1984 British-American epic drama film directed by David Lean. The film is based on the 1924 novel of the same name by E. M. Forster.
The story follows a British woman, Adela Quested (Judy Davis), who travels to India to meet her fiancé, Ronny Heaslop (Nigel Havers). Adela and Ronny are part of the British Raj in India. Adela is eager to explore the country and its culture.
Upon arrival, Adela and Ronny meet Dr. Aziz (Victor Banerjee), an Indian doctor. The two befriend Aziz and he invites them to join him on a tour of the Marabar Caves. Adela is excited to explore the caves, but Ronny is hesitant.
While in the caves, Adela becomes separated from the group and is later found in a state of shock. Aziz is accused of sexually assaulting her. The British community is outraged and a trial is set up to determine Aziz’s guilt.
Adela eventually confesses that she was confused and did not actually see who attacked her. Aziz is exonerated and Adela returns to England.
The film explores the cultural divide between the British and Indian people and the racism and prejudice that existed in India during the British Raj. It also examines the power of friendship and understanding between people of different cultures
