Synopsis – What to Expect from “A King in New York”
A King in New York is a 1957 satirical comedy-drama film directed, written, and produced by Charlie Chaplin. The film stars Chaplin as an exiled European monarch, King Igor Shahdov, who arrives in New York City after a revolution in his homeland.
The film opens with King Igor Shahdov, a deposed monarch, arriving in New York City with his son, Rupert. He is penniless and has no place to stay, so he takes up residence in a hotel owned by a former vaudeville actor, Harry Culverhouse. The King quickly learns that the American way of life is quite different from his own. He is taken aback by the advertising, television, and the hustle and bustle of the city.
The King is determined to make a living and decides to open a nightclub. He also meets a young woman, Marilyn Jones, who works as a chorus girl in a Broadway show. The King is smitten with Marilyn and they begin a relationship.
Meanwhile, the King’s son Rupert is enrolled in a school, but he is not doing well and is constantly being ridiculed by his classmates. The King decides to take Rupert out of school and enroll him in a private academy.
The King also meets a renowned television producer, Angus Meek, who offers him a job on his show. The King agrees to appear on the show, and he quickly becomes a sensation. His show becomes a hit
