Synopsis – What to Expect from “A Futile and Stupid Gesture”
A Futile and Stupid Gesture is a 2018 biographical comedy film based on the life of National Lampoon co-founder Doug Kenney. The film follows Kenney’s rise to fame as he and his co-founders launch the humor magazine National Lampoon, and the subsequent success of the magazine’s spin-off films, books, and radio shows.
The film begins with Doug Kenney (Will Forte) as a young man in the 1970s, struggling to make ends meet as a writer in New York City. He meets fellow comedians Henry Beard (Domhnall Gleeson) and Robert Hoffman (Joel McHale), and the three of them decide to launch a new humor magazine, National Lampoon. Despite the magazine’s initial struggles, it quickly becomes a hit, and Doug and his partners begin to enjoy the success of their new venture.
As the magazine’s popularity grows, Doug and his team begin to explore other mediums, such as film and radio. They produce a number of successful spin-off projects, including Animal House and the National Lampoon Radio Hour. However, the newfound fame and success is not without its problems. Doug’s mental health begins to suffer, and he eventually spirals into a deep depression.
