Synopsis/Plot
A Bridge Too Far is a 1977 British-American epic war film based on the 1974 book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan. It was directed by Richard Attenborough and stars an ensemble cast including Sean Connery, Robert Redford, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, Ryan O’Neal, Gene Hackman, Laurence Olivier, and Dirk Bogarde.
The film tells the story of Operation Market Garden, a failed Allied attempt to break through German lines and capture several bridges in the occupied Netherlands during World War II. The operation was the largest airborne operation in history, involving over 35,000 paratroopers and airlanding troops.
The film follows a group of British, American, and Polish paratroopers as they attempt to capture the bridges leading to the Dutch cities of Eindhoven and Arnhem. As the operation progresses, the Allied forces realize that the Germans are well-prepared and that they may have taken on a mission that is too difficult to complete.
