Synopsis/Plot
9 Songs is a 2004 British art drama film written and directed by Michael Winterbottom. It stars Kieran O’Brien and Margo Stilley as two young lovers who meet at a London music venue and embark on a passionate and intense relationship. The film chronicles their love affair over the course of a single summer, and is framed around nine popular songs that the couple attend at various concerts.
The film begins with Matt, an English glaciologist, and Lisa, an American exchange student, meeting at a London music venue. Over the course of the summer, they attend nine concerts together and develop a passionate and intense relationship. The couple explore their love for each other through sex, conversation, and music. As the summer progressesMatt and Lisa’s relationship is strained by the end of the summer due to the pressures of their respective lives. Matt is preparing to leave for the Arctic for a year-long research project, while Lisa is struggling with her studies and the prospect of returning to the United States. Despite this, they remain close and continue to see each other whenever possible. In the end, Lisa returns to the United States and Matt leaves for the Arctic, but they remain in contact and the film ends with them continuing their relationship.
