Synopsis – What to Expect from “55 Days at Peking”
55 Days at Peking is a 1963 American historical drama film set in Peking (now Beijing) during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion.
The film follows the story of American, British, French, and Italian legations in Peking, besieged by the Boxers, a fanatical Chinese militia. Major Matt Lewis (Charlton Heston) is the American commander of the legation guard, who must protect the legations from the Boxers and their Imperial Chinese allies.
The film begins with the Boxers setting fire to the countryside and attacking the Chinese Christians and foreigners. Major Lewis and his men manage to hold off the Boxers, but the situation becomes increasingly dire as the siege continues and the legations are cut off from the outside world.
The legations are also in constant danger of being attacked by the Imperial Chinese forces, led by General Rung Fu (David Niven). Major Lewis and his men must defend the legations against the onslaught of the Boxers and the Imperial Chinese forces.
The film culminates in a massive battle between the legations and the Boxers and Imperial Chinese forces. Major Lewis and his men are able to successfully defend the legations, but the siege has taken its toll on the legations and their inhabitants.
At the end of the film, Major Lewis and the legations are able to return to their respective countries, but the events of the siege have left a lasting impression on them. The film
