Synopsis/Plot
50/50 is a 2011 American comedy-drama film directed by Jonathan Levine and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Anjelica Huston. The film is based on the true story of a young man’s battle with cancer.
Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a 27-year-old radio journalist living in Seattle, Washington. After experiencing back pain for several months, he finally visits a doctor and is diagnosed with a rare form of spinal cancer. With a 50/50 chance of survival, Adam begins a difficult journey of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, as well as the emotional roller coaster that comes with a life-threatening illness.
Adam’s best friend, Kyle (Seth Rogen), is determined to help him through the ordeal. Kyle’s attempts to cheer Adam up are often misguided, but ultimately endearing. Adam’s mother, Diane (Anjelica Huston), is supportive but also struggles to cope with her son’s illness. Katherine (Bryce Dallas Howard), Adam’s therapist, provides him with guidance and support as he navigates the emotional turmoil of his diagnosis.
